Percy Priest Lake, one of Tennessee’s premier recreational destinations, is named after Congressman James Percy Priest, who was born on April 1, 1900, in Carter’s Creek, Maury County. Unlike most U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects, which are typically named after nearby geographical locations, this lake received its name through a Congressional Act on July 2, 1958, officially changing it from Stewart’s Ferry to J. Percy Priest Lake.

History of Percy Priest Lake

The project was funded by Congress in 1963, with construction beginning on June 29, 1963. After four years of development, the dam was completed in December 1967 at a cost of $57.3 million, and the lake was fully impounded in May 1968. Percy Priest Lake sits on the Stones River, a tributary of the Cumberland River, with the dam located just 15 miles upstream from downtown Nashville.
